“A rollercoaster, but a highly enjoyable one!”
That’s how Nick reflects on his five-year milestone with the company. It’s been a journey defined by challenge, growth, and strong relationships. From early hurdles to building and leading a high-performing team, Nick has helped shape not only a growing business, but a culture grounded in trust, collaboration and belief in people.
Finding the Right Fit, and Making it Count
Nick entered recruitment on the advice of others who recognised his personality and natural fit for the role. At the time, he was in his early 30s and looking for a fresh start in a new profession – one where he could be trained and supported from the ground up. “I needed someone to take a bit of a chance on me,” he says.
After being recommended IT Works for its strong training culture, Nick reached out directly to CEO Stuart Quinney and secured an interview which got him the job. From day one, he could see that the company was serious about investing in its people and building something long-term. “They were just genuine people,” he recalls.
That early impression stuck. “It was a great opportunity to train within a profession in an environment that invests in its people,” he says. And while that opportunity brought him in, what’s kept him here is clear: “My team, absolutely. Seeing them develop and get the opportunities I had – its life changing.”
Standout Moments and Shared Successes
As Europe’s Head of Practice, Nick’s proudest moments come from seeing the European division grow during challenging periods. “Our resilience in Europe, and the impact we’ve made – especially in a tough market – is something I’m really proud of.”
He also speaks highly of the people he's worked with and supported. “Watching talent develop – take Henry Knott as a prime example – seeing their confidence and ability grow over time has been incredibly rewarding. I’m proud to have played a part in that.”
And Nick couldn’t talk about standout moments without mentioning 'Tackle Africa' - the charity football tournament IT Works won in September 2024; a victory he’s proudly (and repeatedly) reminded us of ever since!
Leading with Honesty and Perspective
Nick takes a straightforward, people-focused approach to leadership. “Be normal. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not,” he says. He’s quick to highlight the importance of collaboration across the business. “You learn that you can’t do it all – and that’s where support from operations, marketing, finance and others becomes essential.”
For Nick, good leadership comes down to trust, transparency and recognising the value in every part of the business.
Growth Through People
Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of Nick’s time at the company has been contributing to a culture where people thrive. “We’ve grown together and learnt from one another. It’s fantastic seeing new people come in and develop – both professionally and personally.”
Looking Ahead
Nick’s focus now is on building again. “We’ve got a strong group of fantastic individuals, and I truly believe they have the capability to be brilliant. The potential in this team is exceptional, and that’s what motivates me – continuing to develop something special.”
Looking forward to what the next five years has in store!
